This is an illustrated and interactive book that uses Augmented Reality (AR) to bring the illustrations to life. The story was inspired by the legend of Yara, a mermaid from Brazilian folklore. While most books on Brazilian folklore are for kids, this one is adapted to the adult public by using elements of terror literature. The project proposes to value Brazilian folklore as a tool for constructing a social identity since even inside Brazilian culture, the local folklore is seen as childish, while European folklore is consumed by all ages. This book was made by Amanda Sakai and Sophia Kraenkel as their final project in the Graphic Design Graduate program of the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) - SP.
Dies ist ein illustriertes und interaktives Buch, das Augmented Reality (AR) nutzt, um die Illustrationen zum Leben zu erwecken. Die Geschichte ist von der Legende der Yara, einer Meerjungfrau aus der brasilianischen Folklore, inspiriert.Während sich die meisten Bücher über brasilianische Folklore an Kinder richten, ist dieses Buch durch die Verwendung von Elementen aus der Horrorliteratur für ein erwachsenes Publikum konzipiert.Das Projekt verfolgt das Ziel, die brasilianische Folklore als Mittel zur Konstruktion einer sozialen Identität aufzuwerten. In the story, the main character is a man from São Paulo who loses his wife, Celina, and moves to the Manaus (Amazon) to work. But starts seeing his dead lover in all the women he meets, including a girl from an indigenous tribe.
In der Geschichte ist die Hauptfigur ein Mann aus São Paulo, der seine Frau Celina verliert und nach Manaus im Amazonasgebiet zieht, um dort zu arbeiten. Doch schon bald beginnt er, seine verstorbene Geliebte in allen Frauen zu sehen, denen er begegnet – darunter auch ein Mädchen aus einem indigenen Stamm.

The main character, because of his depression, starts abusing alcohol and Ayahuasca, a psychoactive plant from the Amazon region. He then starts having dreams and visions associated with Yara, a mermaid that makes men obsessed with her.
Aufgrund seiner Depression beginnt die Hauptfigur, Alkohol und Ayahuasca, eine psychoaktive Pflanze aus dem Amazonasgebiet, zu missbrauchen. Daraufhin beginnt er, Träume und Visionen zu haben, die mit Yara in Verbindung stehen – einer Meerjungfrau, die Männer von sich besessen macht.

Augmented Reality (AR) interactions
In the book, some illustrations were animated and were visible through an AR app. They are an integral part of the story and at the end, the choice the readers make changes the fate of the main character. The following videos show all the interactions.
